New mammogram guidelines could hurt black women
New recommendations from the government on when women should begin getting mammograms and how often they should done could have a very negative effect on black women as they have a higher rate of death due to late detection. Eating Disorders and African Americans
Eating disorders are illnesses most frequently found in young women, although boys and young men are also victims. We often hear of high school and college girls plus fashion models being afflicted with these disorders, but we don’t often hear about the problem in women of color. Howard Med Students start free clinic in Washington DC
A group of Howard Med Students saw a need for healthcare services in Washington DC and instaed of just talking about it they did something about it. They started a free clinic.

Swine Flu puts more blacks and hispanics in hospital
More blacks and hispanics are being hospitalized for Swine Flu. Health officials believe it’s because blacks and Hispanics suffer disproportionately from asthma, diabetes and other health problems that make people more vulnerable to the flu. Read more by clicking the link below:

Most new cases of HIV among black women caused by heterosexual activity
Black women account for the largest share of new HIV infections – 61 percent – among women. That’s an infection rate nearly 15 times that of White women. And most of those African-American women were infected through heterosexual activity.

More blacks die from treatable and preventable causes
A new study “Black-White Differences in Avoidable Mortality in the United States, 1980-2005,” found that death from preventable or treatable conditions represented half of all deaths for individuals under age 65 and accounted for nearly 70 percent of the black-white mortality difference. The desire for straight hair keeps many African-American women from exercising and that can be the root of serious health problems. Black girls are 50% more likely to suffer from Bulimia
Many believe eating disorders like bulimia to be a "white girls" disease. A new study shows just the opposite. Black girls are 50% more likely to suffer from Bulimia than white girls and because of stereotypes are less likely to be diagnosed.
